Port of Cultures,
Mariupol, Ukraine

design: Petra Jablonická, Agnieszka Wnuczak, Christoph Stark, Matúš Hudec
year: 2020

The main idea of our proposed design was to raise the new building of the Port of Cultures from the ashes of the old one.

The original building has a tremendous history and an important meaning for collective memory of citizens of Mariupol, and therefore we want to keep the strong presence of it. Our new Port of Cultures is built within the original exterior walls. The two facades facing the street are the ones which are the most visible for citizens and also are the ones which keep the memory of 2014 incident. That’s the reason we are conserving those two facades the most, and also restoring part of the fifth storey, to remind the previous story of the building.
Walking behind the left corner of our building we are leading the cut through the old walls down and uncovering the new Port of Cultures. From the back of the building we are losing the view of the old and leaving the space for the new.
